I recently wrote about my experience in using Apple’s new M1 MacBook Pro over the past month. If you’ve picked one up — or perhaps the new M1 MacBook Air — you need something to keep it looking new when you’re carrying it around. A laptop sleeve is a great option for casual use. It’s not bulky and you can just slide the laptop in. If you’re looking for a minimalist option with some serious style to complement your new Apple purchase, they don’t get much better than the Mujjo Sleeve for 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
This is a very attractive-looking laptop sleeve, and one that’s very natural and warm-feeling. No plastics and no cardboard-stiff leather. Mujjo uses premium materials.
The majority of the Mujjo Case is made of felt. It’s thick, soft and treated to reduce peeling and enhance water repellence. The flap is made of full-grain, vegetable tanned leather. It’s waxed and treated with aniline oil. Edges are left raw. The leather is offered in black or tan. I’m pretty fond of the tan — it really contrasts nicely with the dark grey felt. Even the metal snap is the subject of careful consideration, made of gunmetal gray alloy and mounted to an additional layer of felt so no metal contacts the laptop.
Built to be Functional (and to Last)
Some careful design has gone into the Mujjo Sleeve. The asymmetrical flap closure and contrast between the leather and felt offer more style than most laptop sleeves. However, the materials don’t just look and feel warm and organic, they add to the functionality.
For example, the soft felt ensures a MacBook never gets scratched, while also providing some protective padding. The felt is also water resistant. The snap closure holds the sleeve securely closed, but metal never comes in contact with the laptop within. The stitching is precise and free of loose threads, boding well for its longevity. A MacBook in the Mujjo sleeve isn’t offered military-grade drop and water protection, but it is well-equipped to survive carrying around and daily use by most people – and looks very stylish while doing so.
This is more than just a basic sleeve. Open the flap and there’s a felt divider running the entire length that creates a storage compartment large enough for carrying documents or small gadgets like earbuds — while keeping them completely separate from the laptop. Inside that compartment, Mujjo designers sewed a slotted leather pocket that can safely hold cards. There’s even a mini slot to securely hold a memory card.
The first test, of course (at least in this case), is whether the Mujjo Sleeve fits the new M1 MacBook Pro. The answer is yes. It slides in nicely and fits snugly without a lot of shifting around. Mujjo says this sleeve is also compatible with the new 13-inch M1 MacBook Air, as well as Apple’s previous Intel-based, 13-inch MacBook Pro/Air models with Retina displays.
I wasn’t about to drop my MacBook Pro off a table, but the thick felt feels as though it would offer a significantly better chance of survival. I did check out water exposure. I don’t think I’d want the leather to get soaked, but the felt lived up to the water repellent claim. Liquid just pools on it…
Based on my experience with Mujjo’s iPhone cases (review here), that leather is going to remain soft and supple while developing a unique patina.
If you carry around a 13-inch MacBook Pro or MacBook Air and you want bulletproof protection, you’ll need to go with a hefty laptop case with ballistic nylon and masses of foam.
However, if you want solid basic protection in a minimalist sleeve that looks uniquely stylish, combines premium materials with thoughtful features, and exudes craftsmanship instead of mass production, check out the Mujjo Sleeve. The best part is this premium sleeve carries a decidedly non-premium price tag — currently just $69.90 direct from Mujjo.
Disclosure: Mujjo provided a sleeve for evaluation but had no input into this review.
