Way back in September 2019, I reviewed the LyperTek Tevi true wireless earbuds. I gave them a glowing review and so did quite a few other technology journalists. The Tevi even garnered a few awards They were clear and well-tuned earbuds with little to beat them at the price. The Tevi earbuds are still on sale today but they have since been renamed as the LyperTek PurePlay Z3.

Now LyperTek are back with a new pair of earbuds and this time it’s the SoundFree S20. A version of these true wireless earbuds first appeared on my desk earlier this year under a different name but the lawyers intervened because of problems with the name and so the launch was delayed while LyperTek searched for a new moniker. The company also took advantage of the delay to tweak the product a little more to create the earbuds I’m reviewing today.

These new true wireless earbuds have been designed to be supremely comfortable and I can confirm the LyperTek team has succeeded. Not only do they fit comfortably in the ear, but they also sit securely while forming an excellent passive seal that cuts out a lot of external noise. LyperTek provides a good selection of silicone ear tips in a variety of sizes and shapes so users can achieve the perfect fit. And the perfect fit is the answer to getting the best out of these earbuds.

Possibly the biggest innovation with the SoundFree S20 is the use of a single silver button on each earpiece for controlling the earbuds. The buttons can be used to play and pause music, answer and end phone calls, adjust volume levels and much more besides. Most true wireless earbuds these days use touch-sensitive control pads for controlling the music. I always find myself pressing the controls accidentally when all I’m trying to do is reposition the earbuds in my ears. The use of a clickable button on the top of each earbud is a huge improvement and I much prefer it.

The LyperTek SoundFree S20 stow away in a plastic charging case when not being used. The case is finished with a textured surface which should look nice for longer and won’t be spoiled by fingermarks and scratches. Some true wireless earbuds are so stylish and have such a smooth finish that you simply don’t want to use them in case they get scratched or damaged. These are earbuds designed to be used all day and every day.

A full charge of the LyperTek SoundFree S20 will give up to eight hours of playtime, enough for a full day of listening and possibly up to a week of commuting or workouts at the gym. There’s also an extra 40 hours of backup charge in the hinged charging case and that can be replenished using the supplied USB-C charging cable or a wireless charging pad.

Pairing the SoundFree S20 is a simple one-step process. The pairing process begins as soon as the lid of the charging case is flipped. By the time the earbuds are in your ears, they’re already paired with the host smartphone and ready to go. The version of Bluetooth used is 5.0 and there’s support for AAC and SBC audio codecs, which means both iOS and Android users can benefit from high-quality music streaming.

Although there is a big trend currently towards ANC (active noise canceling) earbuds, the SoundFree S20 don’t have that function but they do offer a high level of passive insulation that helps to block out unwanted sound and there are even double-flange ear tips to help with this. There is an ambient sound feature included that enables the wearer of the earbuds to hear what’s going on around them, whether that be traffic noise, travel announcements or a colleague who speaks without realizing you have earbuds in.

Another trend at the moment in the world of true wireless earbuds is the use of ever-larger dynamic drivers to create a lot more bass. LyperTek has chosen to use a much smaller 6mm driver in the SoundFree S20. The result is a less flabby and boomy bass with lower frequencies articulated with more precision and faster dynamic response. I can honestly say that the SoundFree 20 are some of the most accurate earbuds I’ve heard in quite a while. The midrange and treble are so clear they are almost breathtaking.

There’s a flat response to the SoundFree S20’s sound signature that effortlessly reveals all the details in a recording. Other earbuds with a bigger bass may be more rewarding at first listen, but five minutes with the SoundFree S20 will have you appreciate just how good a properly tuned pair of earbuds can sound. If I want to hear music as the artist or recording engineer intended, I think I’d go for a pair of LyperTek SoundFree S20 earbuds.

Verdict: These new true wireless earbuds are the most faithful-sounding I’ve heard in a while. The tuning is neutral and boasts a clarity that is stunning. The Bluetooth connection is robust and reliable, while the battery life is exemplary. I love the fact the charging case can also be charged wirelessly. LyperTek may have delayed the launch of these new earbuds because of legal issues, but the wait has been worth it as it gave LyperTek’s engineering team the time to produce a pair of earbuds with astonishing clarity and superb dynamic response that makes them a natural choice for people who appreciate audio fidelity.

Pricing and availability: The LyperTek SoundFree S20 earbuds will be available from Amazon at the end of February and will be priced at £69 / $69 / €69.
