Activision is perfectly happy to let you continue to play Call of Duty: Warzone for free, occasionally spending some money on battle passes and just generally wreaking havoc across the island of Verdansk. But! Activision would be even happier if you would just go ahead and buy the full yearly release, which in this case is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. And, as luck would have it, there’s a free trial weekend happening alongside the launch of Season 2: just a taste.
According to the Call of Duty Blog, the free weekend begins on Thursday, February 25, at 10:00 AM Pacific, and runs until Thursday, March 4, at the same time.
In order to play, console users just need to head over to their preferred storefront and download. PC players can go through callofduty.com.
Included in the free weekend is the new Outbreak mode in Zombies, a squad-based, large-scale adaptation of the zombies experience, where you have to traipse around the Ural Mountains dispatching hordes of zombies as you go. It should be an interesting twist from normal zombies modes, with a hint of the sort of open-style design from Warzone and Blackout before it. There’s also a risk/reward mechanic involved where you can decide whether to exfiltrate for rewards or press on to try your lick.
PlayStation owners also get to play the two-player Onslaught Zombies mode based off of multiplayer maps.
When it comes to multiplayer, you get a bit of a sampler in the form of Apocalypse 24.7, which Treryarch describes as a “grab bag of modes” on a new map on a Golden Triangle jungle cartel base. You’ll be picking from Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Domination and Hardpoint.
We’ve also got the classic progressive Gun Game mode, where you work through 20 weapons from pistol to knife, as well as the 2 vs 2 Gunfight Blueprints and the 3 vs 3 Face Off playlists. We’ve also got playlists specifically for Team Deathmatch and Domination, as well as Nuketown 24.7 and the 40 player team multiplayer mode.
If you already own the thing, you’ve still got a reason to pay particular attention here. Not only is it the launch of Season 2, but we’ve also got Double XP and Double Weapon XP over the weekend, from February 26 to March 1. Call of Duty is a massive, sprawling beast these days, and so there’s no shortage of stuff to get lost in here.
